Latin America Studies notes (2009)


Sarmiento- Liberal, separated from federalists. Brought education to argentina

Unitarian wanted to import Euro culture (sarmiento)

Federalist- mostly from providences. Ranchers that wanted more local culture.  Local economy.

Barbarians- uncivilized people. Ruler manor, and people that can govern themselves. Portrayed as cruel.

Rosas- Dictatorship (like slaughterhouse),  Claimed to be federalist but ran country as tyranny (centralist)

Slaughterhouse- represents Uncivilized animals/people

Caudillo- highest patron of all, and the partys natural leader.  Supported and formed own group.

Rafael Carrera- Conservative, overthrew Morazan (rosas police) and shilded catholic church from liberal assaults/indigenous people.

New Granada- Greater Columbia= Colombia, Venezuela, and Equador.

Central American Republic= Guatamala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica

Potosi- Major silver mine 1540 Peru.  Modernization, gambling

Devine Right- Govt would decide where churches would be built and taxed people

Quilumbo- Settlement of escaped slaves in brazil
Cadiz Constitution- Liberal

Hidalgo- Tried to get people to rebel in name of Spanish America.

Father Morelos- prohibited use of caste system

Sugar Crisis-1921 many sugar mills go bankrupt same with Cuban and Spanish banks.  Sugar crisis brought on by fall of sugar prices in US market.  1929 sugar price below .01

Tobacco Production- Brittish introduced tremendous amounts of slaves.  Tobacco growers turned to Sugar growers
Jose Marti- Fought against the threat of United States expansionism into Cuba. He dedicated his life to the promotion of liberty, political independence for Cuba and intellectual independence for all Spanish Americans

War of 1796- Spanish and English for a decade.

Hyped up by many people and fought his own battles
Could promote own heroic image. (personal descriptions, manipulate image)

Sugar Timber- Cuba had 1/3 of products taken from USA in return for timber.

Sugar Press- Forests were cut down

North/South America- Euros already established land
Invention of latin America- Euros.  America is invention of Europe.
Discovery a part of euro history, but new.
Racialization- Skin color, language, culture
Coloninism- Power one group puts into another
Bartolome De Las Casas-  Exposing cruelty on indigenous people
